The hustle and bustle of Braamfontein is a hub of local creativity. Your first local-is-lekker stop here is Fashion Kraal, which showcases many young designers under one roof. Situated on the corner of Loveday and Commissioner Streets, they pride themselves on providing top-quality fashion that you just can’t get anywhere else. Also in Braam is the Me and You Clothing Boutique. With new designs arriving weekly, they offer a fabulous array of on-trend womenswear. Make sure you stop for a cuppa at one of the area’s excellent coffee spots before you leave!
Not too far away is the Fashion District Institute in the Joburg CBD. Home to Fashion Kapitol, this is a can’t-miss shopping destination, a real, trendy local design hotspot. It’s filled to the brim with a variety of local fashion boutiques – and even a tattoo parlour! If you’re there on a Saturday, why not wander through their weekly fashion market?
Rosebank has more local fashion secrets to share. At the Rosebank Mall, you can get your local fashion fix at YDE, the Young Designers Emporium. Founded specifically to give young local fashion talent a platform, YDE offers clothing, bags, accessories and even footwear from 80 diverse designers countrywide. There are also branches at Sandton City Shopping Centre and East Rand Mall. Another mall favourite is the effortlessly chic Nicci Boutiques, where you can find the locally-produced Nicci and Cocoon labels.
Next, take a walk to Rosebank Mall’s sister centre, The Zone @ Rosebank, which prides itself on being the upscale home of local fashion. It is home to a wide variety of boutiques, including Thula Sindi, Burgundy Fly (also at East Rand Mall and Maponya Mall), JJ Shoeman, The Space – and Space Man – as well as Big Blue, which can also be found at East Rand Mall. With such choice, you’re sure to find something sensational to add an Afrochic twist to your wardrobe.
Maponya Mall is a hotbed of locally-owned stores that offer a range of local and international fashion. Mebala Couture is a haven for lovers of bold patterns and a blend of traditional and modern sensibilities. Even your kids can get in on the action with kid-friendly on-trend clothes from Naartjie, also found at Bedford Centre and Sandton City. Other spots to find local brands include Burgundy Fly, which also has a store at East Rand Mall, and Ginger Mary, a label from the Truworths department store stable which has its own standalone store here, filled to the brim with gorgeous local design.
