As the largest and friendliest city in South Africa, you can find adventures galore for the whole family, from rollicking rollercoasters to a trip to the stars! Here are some of our favourite ways to have fun in the city of gold, no matter your age.
Gold Reef City is one of Joburg’s favourite family attractions – and it’s no secret why, with more than thirty thrilling rides on offer. No matter whether you prefer to slither along the curves of the Anaconda or freefall from the heights of the Tower of Terror – or even if you’d prefer a more sedate whirl on the Giant Wheel – there’s something here to get you excited. There’s even a special kiddies area so the little ones don’t feel left out of the excitement. Don’t forget to bring a raincoat if you plan on taking the plunge on the Log Ride and you don’t plan on letting the sun dry you off!
As the park is situated on the edge of one of the city’s oldest goldmines, you can travel back in time to a 1800s mining town! Take a trip back in time to the infamous gold rush that led to the foundation of the city. Ever held a real bar of gold? Be sure to visit the mine museum – and, of course, the tour is essential, providing a thrilling insight into what is was like to work in a gold mine more than a hundred years ago. If small spaces aren’t your thing, though, you can still watch a live gold pouring and feel the heat of this coveted metal. Download a map of the park here and start planning your next visit!
For an intergalactic adventure, visit Joburg’s Planetarium, on the Braamfontein campus of the University of the Witwatersrand. Established in 1960, it was the first full-sized Planetarium in Africa and the second in the Southern Hemisphere! Offering a variety of shows, including family shows, the Planetarium is open every day of the week except Sundays. Are you a secret stargazer? Holds thumbs for a clear sky and take some time before the show to view comets, constellations and faraway galaxies through the powerful telescopes.
Joburg is known for its hot, sunny days – and what better way to enjoy it than with a trip to Wild Waters? About 30km outside the city, this water theme park is a full-day adventure. From daring Kamakazi Slides to Raging Rapids and the more chilled Wave Pools, this water world is ideal for a fun-filled family outing. There are some great green grassy open spaces and picnic spots, as well as a shop and a take-away spot if you don’t feel like bringing your own food. Tired of swimming? This water wonderland also offers a putt-putt course and a beach area for the kids to play in.
Get ready to get lost in the most fun way possible – and find your way out again! The Honeydew A-MAIZE-ING Mazes are waiting to challenge your sense of direction. You can brave the maze as a team or split up and compete against your friends and family for the title of Maze Master – and if you solve the quiz, you can enjoy the sweet taste of success and free ice cream! Those looking for a nighttime adventure should not miss the mesmerizing Moonlight Maze, a chance to tackle the maze under the stars. Not so keen on the giant maze? Not to worry! There are also smaller mazes, games and puzzles in the courtyard area suited for the whole family. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes – and don’t forget a hat!
